Gaylord E. “Sarge” Sargent, 81, of Chelyan passed away Nov. 30, 2009, in CAMC General Hospital, Charleston.

He was born in Denton, Ky., on Oct. 13, 1928, and was a retired heavy equipment operator from Cyprus Amax Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA with over 40 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and was stationed on the USS Estes, which was the flagship for the detonation of the first hydrogen bomb.

He was a Christian and a member of Chelyan Church of the Nazarene, where he enjoyed playing the guitar. He truly loved singing and playing gospel music. He was a loving, caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather and an overall wonderful man to all who knew him. He loved feeding the birds, especially hummingbirds, and any stray animals that would come around.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Florence Rice Bellew Sargent; brothers, Lloyd and Lenard; half brothers, John, Clayton and Murl Bellew; and half sister, Marie Kelly.

Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Norma Tucker Sergant; daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy of Chelyan and Anita and Bart Lundell of Salem; granddaughter, his “punkin”, Tamara Williams of Wilmington, N.C.; stepgrandson, Luke Kuhens of Clarksburg; sister, Shirley Young; sisters-in-law, Jeraldine “Jerry” Sargent of Marmet and Martha “Jennie” Bellew of Dawes; brother-in-law and his wife, Joe and Jan Tucker of Benton, Ky.; and many, many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the physicians and nursing staff of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at CAMC General Hospital for their kind and loving care, especially Carrie Keen, who took excellent care of “her little man.”
