G. Pres Russell          Send Condolences

Pres Russell, 90, of Nitro died October 30, 2009, at Hubbard Hospice House.

In recent years, he had been a resident of Charleston Gardens Assisted Living Community in Charleston.

Born May 10, 1919, in Elkins, he was the son of George Preston and Bertha Russell. For 60 years he was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Aloise Russell, who preceded him in death.

He also was the treasured father of two children, George Russell III of South Charleston and Dr. Ruth Russell of Bloomington, Indiana.

Pres was a doting grandfather to Alexander and Thomas Russell of South Charleston and a wonderful father-in-law to Jane Duffy and Pat Setser. Other family survivors include sister-in-law, Ruth Mann and her husband, Dewey, of Nitro; nieces, Sue Miller of Lexington, Kentucky, Libby Neuharth of Belleview, Florida, and Ellen Mann and Linda Kelly of Charleston; and nephews, Bill Murray of Kirksville, Missouri, Kenny Lucas of Paducah, Kentucky, and Wilson Mann of Cross Lanes.

A graduate of Morgantown High School, Pres earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from West Virginia University. For many years he was a member of the WVU Emeritus Club. Pres was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Italy. He taught at Officer Candidate School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, prior to leading a group of specialists assigned to reestablish radio communications in several Italian cities after they were liberated. Following the war, Pres was a control systems engineer with Monsanto, Nitro, where he retired after 30 years.

Pres served his community in many other ways as well. He assumed responsibilities at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Nitro, and was a member of the Nitro Masonic Lodge and Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston. He was a founding member of the Nitro Community Development Corporation, serving as treasurer for 10 years. In this role, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Nitro Community Center.

Pres' interests and talents extended beyond these good works. He was a founding member of the Charleston Gardens poker club and a passionate fan of WVU football and basketball. He learned to skateboard at age 70 and raced down North 21st Street on a scooter for the first time at age 80. For many years after retirement, Pres and his wife, Aloise, traveled frequently and widely, including throughout West Virginia and most other U.S. states.

Pres' family wishes to especially thank the staff of Charleston Gardens Assisted Living and Hubbard Hospice House for their abundant care and support.
