Richard G. Morgan          Send Condolences

Richard “Dick” Grant Morgan, 72, of Apex, N.C., passed away at his home on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, a proud father and a cherished grandfather.

Dick was born on April 27, 1937, in Kanawha City. He entered the Air Force on Aug. 31, 1954, and was based at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. He served in the Korean War and his active duty service included postings in Southeast Asia and at the Pentagon.

He was honorably discharged in 1958 and soon thereafter enrolled at Morris Harvey College, known today as the University of Charleston. He graduated magna cum laude with bachelor's degree in business management. In the spring of 1963, Dick received straight As despite holding down a challenging course load of 21 hours. At that time, Dick held the record for the most As in the history of the university.

Over the years, he worked primarily as a certified public accountant and a real estate broker. His diverse career included positions as a revenue agent for the state of West Virginia, a tax manager for a real estate firm and budget and accounting director for North Carolina State University. He left the university to begin a career in commercial real estate and owned two real estate firms, Danalor Realty Corporation, named for his three children David, Natalie and Lori, and Tri-State Atlantic Properties, while maintaining a CPA/tax practice.

In addition to his business prowess, Dick was a talented, if reluctant, pianist. It would take a good amount of pleading to get him to play, but once he sat down it was hard to get him to stop. His love for the piano was evident, not only through his fingertips, but also through the spark in his eye and the grin on his face as he warmed up and played for hours. Dick would fondly recall playing a “fast song,” as his children would request in their younger years, as they ran around the house so excited that Dad was playing. Memories of the beautiful music he shared will be cherished forever.

Dick is survived by son, David Thomas Morgan and his wife, Norma, of Apex; and daughter, Natalie Jane Walker of Apex and Lori Marie Kemeny and her husband, John, of Raleigh, N.C. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Shane, Lance and Ryan Morgan and Lauren, Erica and Johnny Kemeny; his brother, Jon Raymond Morgan, M.D., of Columbia, S.C.; and nephew, Evan Morgan of Miami, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Morgan, whom he married on July 9, 1972; his brother, Gary Michael Morgan, who died as an infant; and his parents, Norma Neal Morgan, of Columbia, S.C. and Harry Morgan of Key Biscayne, Fla.

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St., Apex, N.C., (919) 362-8233.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, in Thomas Bailey Tucker Cemetery, Poca River Road, Poca.

Cooke Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Nitro, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Stroke Foundation, www.americanstroke.org.

In addition, the family would like to give a special thanks to the medical staff at WakeMed Cary Hospital, the team of WakeMed physical and occupational therapists and the staff at the V.A. Raleigh community-based outpatient clinic.
