Cooke Funeral Home and Crematorium is family owned and operated by a second generation family member, Roger A. Cooke. The business has served many generations of families over the past several years. Mr. Cooke takes great pride in the professionalism and service he is able to offer residents and their families.

Who We Are

Cooke Funeral Home and Crematorium in Nitro, West Virginia was founded in 1939 by Fred and Lillian Cooke to service the community and surrounding areas. Roger A. Cooke began a second location in Cedar Grove, West Virginia in 1985 and added a crematorium at the Nitro location in 2001.

Roger A. Cooke

Roger was born on June 23rd, 1946 and grew up in Nitro, West Virginia. He graduated from Nitro High School and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Morehead State University. He attended and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and earned his Funeral Director's and Embalmer's License in 1977.

Roger has been very involved in his community and throughout the state of West Virginia. Some of his efforts are as follows:

  • Currently serving on the Policy Board of the National Funeral Directors Association
  • Former President of the West Virginia Funeral Directors Association
  • Former President of Preferred Funeral Directors International
  • Board of Directors of the West Virginia Cemetery and Funeral Association
  • Former Mayor of the Town of Cedar Grove, West Virginia
  • Former Member of Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority
  • Former Board Member of Cedar Grove Volunteer Department
  • Former Board Member of the Upper Kanawha Valley Medical Center

Keith Derrick

Keith R. Derrick is a native of Dunbar, a 1969 graduate of Dunbar High School, attended WV State College, and earned his funeral service education at Kentucky School of Mortuary Science and became a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in 1975. He has been assisting families during their time of need since 1973. He has worked at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Gatens Funeral Home, Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, Tyler Mountain Funeral Home and Memory Gardens, and started working for Cooke Funeral Homes in March of 2011.

Keith has lived in Poca since 1980 and has been involved in various activities during his working career, all of them centered on church and community service. He was a former member of the Poca Lions Club and a former member of the board of directors of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. While his two daughters (Kristy and Kelly) were in school, he and his wife, Vicky Luikart Derrick, were active in supporting the various activities they were involved in at Poca elementary, middle, and high school.
